DLD is a neuro-developmental disorder that describes a lifelong difficulty understanding others and expressing yourself. It can look like a child is not listening or is shy to speak, it can cause frustration and low confidence or difficulties with behaviour.
Children with DLD often struggle at school and socially. They are more likely to experience mental health difficulties and later unemployment and economic disadvantage. Up to half of young people in the Australian youth justice system have DLD and associated disorders.
DLD is under-diagnosed and sometimes mis-diagnosed as Autism, Dyslexia or ADHD. A Speech Pathology assessment is necessary to determine whether DLD accurately describes a child's difficulties.
